New sketches have provided an updated look at a hotly anticipated Medway leisure centre set to open later this year. Formerly the Splashes Sports Centre found along Bloors Lane in Rainham, the site was completely knocked down at the start of 2022 to make way for a new state-of-the-art facility.
Plans to deliver the facility faced multiple roadblocks along the way, primarily revolving around budget as the cost of the centre ballooned amid rising construction and material costs. Final approval for the £23.65 million project was ultimately given in November 2022.
Newly submitted renderings of the exterior of the centre show an updated look for the facility, which Medway Council has officially confirmed will be called Cozenton Park Sports Centre. These sketches came as part of planning proposals for the installation of new signage on the facility, displaying the new name and accompanying logo.
In September last year, as the last beam was put in place. Cozenton Park Sports Centre will house two modern swimming pools, a children’s fun pool with flume, wave ball pool and beach area, as well as a training pool for lane swimming and lessons.
Alongside all of this, there will be a fitness gym, cafe and a room for classes and kids’ parties. Medway Council adds: “The centre will have a modern, family-friendly look and feel, including family and accessible changing rooms.
“There will also be electric charging parking spaces, in support of Medway’s climate change and carbon neutral aims and ambitions.” It is estimated that this new facility will open in summer 2024.
