In a heartbreaking turn of events, an Ohio woman‘s aspirations of a three-year global luxury cruise were dashed when the Life at Sea Cruises abruptly canceled the once-in-a-lifetime journey, leaving passengers, including Keri Witman, in disbelief, reported New York Post.
Witman, the head of marketing agency Clever Lucy, had meticulously organized her life, selling her home and signing a short-term lease, all in anticipation of the $38,500 room she reserved on the cruise. The ambitious voyage, offering a three-year stay on board with stops in 148 countries and 382 ports across all continents, was advertised to provide everything from food and travel to internet access and medical care.
The cruise, initially scheduled to depart from Istanbul, faced delays in its departure date, causing uncertainty and frustration among passengers. Life at Sea Cruise had intended to secure the AIDAaura ship from Carnival Corp., but complications arose when another company secured the vessel.
Witman expressed her disappointment, stating, “It was really disappointing to find out it wasn’t going to pan out.” She recounted reaching out to her financial advisors for reassurance, despite the multiple postponements of the departure date.
The cruise company, acknowledging the setback, announced refunds for all passengers in monthly installments from December 1 until February 2024. However, this gesture did little to quell the anger and distress among passengers, some of whom now find themselves without a place to stay.
One passenger told CNN, “There’s a whole lot of people right now with nowhere to go, and some need their refund to even plan a place to go – it’s not good right now.” Another lamented, “I had the next three years of my life planned to live an extraordinary life, and now [I have] nothing. I’m having a hard time moving forward.”
As the aftermath unfolds, the sudden cancellation raises questions about the viability and reliability of luxury cruise offerings, leaving passengers stranded and dreams of a globetrotting adventure shattered.
