A Warrandyte property home to a Gold Rush-era mine is on the market for the first time in 35 years. The home even overlooks the gully where state’s first gold discovery occurred in the 1850s.
Finding the right house to purchase can be like hunting for gold but this property in Melbourne’s northeast raises the bar with its own gold mine.
The Gold Rush-era mine is now non-operational, however it remains one of the many talking points of 80-84 Webb St, Warrandyte, a bushland retreat set on 1.94ha.
Bekdon Richards director Paul Richards said the “very unique” home bordered Warrandyte State Park which contains remnants of the area’s mining history.

The house’s north-facing deck boasts views of Whipstick Gully, the site of Victoria’s first gold discovery in 1851.
“There is a gold mine on the property, as you walk out the gate into the state park you can see six gold mines in a space about 50m of each other,” Mr Bekdon said.
“The mine on the property been semi-filled, you can see the opening.”
He said the house was on the market for the first time in 35 years.
The owner is downsizing after raising four sons at the home.
“The owner calls it (the house) ‘Yarra Mist’, because you can see mist coming off the Yarra in the morning,” Mr Bekdon said.
He said the property was one of the largest private land holdings close to Warrandyte’s town centre.
“It’s hard to imagine you’re so close to the Melbourne CBD when you’re living there, it feels like you’re in the country,” he added.
Yarra Mist includes a storeroom/wine cellar and entertaining room with hand crafted wet bar and open fireplace.
“The family have had parties with over 100 people in just that section,” Mr Bekdon said.
He said the abode’s mid-century character had been immaculately preserved by the family, the property’s second owners.
“It’s stunning, everything is original and in perfect condition,” Mr Bekdon said.
“A builder came through aged in his 70s, he said he’s never seen a property from that time in such good condition.”
However, the owners have updated one of the bathrooms to be wheelchair accessible.
Yarra Mist also has a cedar stable complex comprising six horse stalls.
The home will be auctioned 2.30pm on June 18 with $2.1m-$2.3m price hopes.
