The owner of a Parksville property that features a fitness centre in the city’s industrial park is looking to have its zone designation changed.

The City of Parksville has received a zoning and development bylaw amendment application for 1222 Industrial Way so that the property can facilitate a railing manufacturing business and potentially a future powder-coating facility.

In a proposal summary for the rezoning application, Dave Robertson, president, K&S Railings Ltd., wrote that they are pursuant to purchasing the industrial park property in order to relocate their manufacturing plant to Parksville.

The 1.79-acre property is currently a Comprehensive Development CD–15 zone, which permits a recreation facility and an accessory residential dwelling unit. The applicant is looking to have the property changed back to its initial designation of Industrial I-1, which it had been prior to 1997, in order to better harmonize with the surrounding properties in the area.

The zoning change in 1997 was to establish a fitness centre on the property (currently Jim’s Gym); however, in 2002, as part of city bylaw review initiative, Industrial I-1 zone was updated to permit recreation facility use.

Before the second reading goes before council, the applicant or owner must provide an opportunity for public engagement and submit any comments received to the city’s community planning and building department.
