#TurksandCaicos, September 29, 2023 – Executives of the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority (TCIAA) say they are willing to invest in property in Grand Turk to induce international air arrivals; the strategy was communicated in the September 21st town hall meeting held in the TCI’s capital.

“We are at the point where for us, we need these airports to be profitable and if it means the airports authority needs to start looking at infrastructure development—- meaning helping to build airport hotels so that we can drive some sort of works through that we’re prepared to look at that,” said Selvyn Hawkins, Chairman of the TCIAA.

Residents during the meeting, had questioned the hold up on international flights to the island. Hawkins explained the most significant roadblock to that initiative was inventory.

“With airlines servicing international airlift, their bottom line that they’re looking at is room capacity,” he said.

For years, Grand Turk has struggled with a lack of hotel rooms on the island; several promising projects had started but were inexplicably abandoned.  The cruise sector too is suffering due a lack of amenities and attractions.  Grand Turk will need to boost hotel rooms in order to attract flights which bring long-stay travellers in droves.

Now, in an interesting twist, the TCIAA announces it is willing to build up accommodations in order to help Grand Turk to achieve this goal.
